A little more clarity

Practical answers about creating a study, taking part and understanding the evidence.
What is ClarifyWhy?
ClarifyWhy is customer research software for early-stage founders exploring a startup idea. It helps you design a study around your hypothesis, invite potential customers to AI conversations, and review their experiences.
Who takes part, and who invites them?
You choose and invite people who have experience relevant to your study. You publish the study and share its link with them. ClarifyWhy provides the study design and conversation tools; finding participants is part of your research.
What does the AI do?
The Study Designer helps you shape your research objectives and study brief for your review. After you publish, the AI interviewer speaks with the people you invite, asking about specific experiences and following up on their answers, one question at a time.
What do I receive after a conversation?
You can read each written transcript in your workspace and download transcripts. When available, a per-conversation AI evidence review describes how the responses relate to your hypothesis and where the evidence is limited. You review the conversations and draw your own conclusions; the product does not produce an automatic report combining all interviews.
Can participants speak or type?
Yes. When both formats are enabled and available, participants can talk it through with the AI interviewer or type their answers. Voice offers a natural back-and-forth conversation; typing lets people write at their own pace. Voice needs a microphone, and neither format needs a camera.
Do participants need an account?
No. They open your study link, read the introduction, choose an available format and review the participation details before consenting. Participants must be 18 or older and can skip questions or stop at any time. A share link is an invitation to research, not a job interview.
How long does a conversation take?
Study depth sets a preferred duration: about 10, 15 or 25 minutes. Participants see the estimate before starting. Actual duration varies with the conversation, and they can stop whenever they choose.
Is the beta free, and how do I get access?
The private beta is free within the access and usage limits provided to each creator. Join the waitlist to request access. We’ll email you when we can invite you; joining the list does not immediately open a creator account.
What happens to participants’ responses?
ClarifyWhy saves a written transcript for the study creator. Voice audio is processed to run the conversation, but ClarifyWhy does not save an audio recording. Service providers have their own processing and retention arrangements, explained in our privacy notice. Optional follow-up contact details require a separate choice.
Can an interview prove that my idea will work?
Interviews help you understand real experiences, existing workarounds and what already works. They can strengthen, challenge or narrow a hypothesis. A conversation does not establish market demand or guarantee that someone will use or pay for a proposed product.
Which languages are supported?
The current beta is designed for English-language studies and conversations.
